SMART goals are:

What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to lose 20 pounds, lower your cholesterol, train for a marathon, or impress people at your next high school reunion? Be specific and write down your goals.

Don’t wander aimlessly with no direction. What can you do each day to make your goals a reality? Will you keep a food journal daily or walk a set amount of steps? Measurable goals keep you focused.

Be realistic. You probably won’t achieve the extreme weight loss or fitness levels you see on popular TV shows. Setting lofty goals that are impossible to achieve is setting yourself up to fail. What is going to work with your unique life situation?

Are your goals relevant to what you want the outcome to be? Don’t get distracted by every new health trend that comes along. Don’t veer off the path to success. Set your goals and stick to them.

Be sure your goal is time-bound. Setting both short-term and long-term goals will give you a target to aim for and keep you looking ahead. You can’t reach for something that isn’t there.

Now that you’ve defined your SMART goals, it’s time to motivate yourself to success with an inspiration board. Fitspiration is where the inspiration to get fit and healthy goes visual. Collect your favorite quotes, images, and articles related to the SMART goals you’ve established. You can use a simple bulletin board, art canvas, or poster board to place your items on.

It’s all about you. There’s no right or wrong way to create your board. The purpose is to motivate yourself to success with a visual reminder of what you hope to accomplish. Have fun with your board. Let your unique personality shine through.

Searching online for images of fitspiration boards will give you some ideas. You can update your fitspiration board as often as you like with new images and quotes. Be sure to place your board in a location where you see it frequently throughout the day.

At times you may feel a little overwhelmed when starting a new fitness adventure. Your SMART goals, combined with your fitspiration board, will remind you of where you are going. Think of them as empowering tools on your journey to success.

• Everyone has his or her own source of inspiration, but to me the outdoors is my inspiration, so I’m using this as the anchor of my motivational board. As part of my initiative to spend more time doing activities outdoors, I’ve started to learn to golf at Atunyote course an Upstate NY resort near my work. What I like about it is that it’s a leisurely sport, nothing too strenuous.

Here Comes the Boom, the Movie

Here Comes the Boom
Here Comes the Boom starring Kevin James

This past weekend I was invited to the screening of the movie Here Comes the Boom (in theaters October 12).

I love Kevin James, he’s handsome and funny. His movies makes me laugh because he has no problem looking like a fool. I remember watching him in the King of Queens -hilarious- and from there my love for him grew.

Since I saw the movie preview at the theater I knew I wanted to see the movie, and thanks to the awesome people of gofobo.com I got the chance to watch it before it’s wide release.

The premise of the movie is about this former collage wrestler Scott Voss, now 42 years-old and a biology teacher, who took action to save the music program at Wilkinson High School from a possible cancellation and the music teacher, Marty (Henry Winkler), being laid off.

To make this happen, this not-so-motivated-couldn’t-care-less teacher tried to raise the money among the teachers but these weren’t much help at all, so he tapped into the athlete within him and started practicing mixed martial arts (MMA) to become a fighter. In the process he “re-learned” to love his students and gave it his all in and outside the classroom.

As Kevin James said before the movie started – via video anyway – this is an inspirational movie that teaches you that with determination you can go far. But not only a good lesson is behind this there are also tons of laughs and many moments of greatness.

Starring in the movie also are, Salma Hayek as Bella Flores; Charice as Malia De La Cruz; Bas Rutten as Niko; Greg Germann as Principal Becher and the real life fighter Krzysztof Soszynski among others.

This weekend go and enjoy the Here Comes the Boom and see that No One Will Fight for His Students like Mr. Voss.

Jumping In the Love Train

Love is all you need for weight loss
Love yourself; be kind, and see the pounds melt

Thank you to the fabulous and gorgeous Erin Stutland (@EStutland), I’m jumping – head first – into the Love Train.

During the Ignite session at Fitbloggin’12 Erin gave a magical presentation in five minutes that kept me excited and totally engaged. The learning from the contrast between her story and her mom’s is something that I’m taking with me and apply to my daily life.

What I Learned?

Well that the way you talk to yourself – good or bad, positive or destructive – takes an impact in everything you do in your life, especially in you weight loss journey.

Maybe you are one of those that think that being tough is what you need to lose weight. But think about it for a moment; are you being tough or mean?

According to the dictionary, tough is defined as: strong or firm in texture but flexible and not brittle. In the other hand, mean is defined as: being selfish in a petty way; unkind, cruel, spiteful, or malicious.

See the difference? Which one you think will give you more encouragement while losing weight? Being tough or being mean? I vote for being tough. Applying “tough love” in my weight loss journey works better for me and give me a sense of control and encouragement that keeps me going on.

Because when you apply tough love you are able to see the error of your ways and -more important – LEARN from your mistakes or previous experiences. This doesn’t happen when you are mean to yourself. Because the tendency is to belittle yourself in the hopes to get a reaction or wake-up call, but unfortunately this could work against your efforts. Pushing you to a conduct of “what the heck, I messed up already” or ” I’m not worth the try why bother.”

Recently I’ve learn that I do more good to me when I’m being kind and apply tough love than when I’m mean; and after listening to Erin I’m even more convinced that LOVE and tenderness conquers all, even WEIGHT LOSS.

So what are you waiting for? Give it a try. Stop being mean to yourself and start loving you. Jump in the Love Train and enjoy the ride. What do you got to lose!?
